1.Thin and brittle nails: Thin and brittle nails may suggest onychomycosis (fungal infection), nutritional deficiencies, or diabetes.
2.Pitting: Small depressions on the nail plate, called pitting, are often seen in conditions like psoriasis, alopecia areata, and eczema. These indicate changes in the nail matrix.
3.Nail discoloration: Discoloration can be a sign of fungal infections, yellow nail syndrome, psoriasis, jaundice, trauma, melanoma, medication use, or chronic cardiopulmonary insufficiency.
4.Nail atrophy: Nail atrophy, featuring thinning and shrinking nails, can be congenital or acquired. Acquired nail atrophy is usually caused by irreversible damage to the nail matrix from trauma or scarring.
Syphilis and hyperthyroidism can also cause nail atrophy.
